Our Luxurious Mansion Rooms

A Legacy of Elegance:
The History of the Harry Packer Mansion

In 1874, this grand estate was built as a wedding gift from industrial titan Asa Packer to his son, Harry Packer. Asa Packer — famed founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University — envisioned a home as distinguished as his family’s legacy. Six years later, following Asa’s passing, Harry expanded the mansion with the addition of a majestic front veranda and an elegant study wing. These additions were the work of Addison Hutton, a renowned Quaker architect celebrated for his refined, timeless designs.

The veranda, crafted from striking Vermont green sandstone, still features its original mahogany ceiling and ornate tile flooring. For the mansion’s opulent interiors, the elite firm Herter Brothers of New York City — favored by Gilded Age elite — was commissioned to complete the decorative work, creating a space of enduring luxury and character.

As a reflection of its 19th-century origins, the mansion does not include modern amenities such as televisions, in-room refrigerators, or personal safes.

The Carriage House:
Some Featuring an Electric Fireplace - Each Featuring a Queen Size Bed & Private Bath

Predating the mansion itself, the Carriage House was built in 1861 by Asa Packer to service his own residence. When the properties were later subdivided, the Carriage House became part of the Harry Packer Mansion due to its close proximity — just 50 feet away.

Today, this beautifully preserved building evokes the feel of a Victorian hunting lodge. Rich burgundies, dark greens, and classic plaids accent the space, while fox hunt scenes and period-style furnishings add a layer of rustic sophistication. The Carriage House now contains six guest rooms, including two loft suites, each featuring:

  • Electric fireplaces

  • Queen-size beds

  • Private bathrooms with granite countertops

Guests of the Carriage House enjoy full access to the Mansion and all its amenities — blending history, comfort, and timeless charm into every stay.
